Speaker Johnson Heads To Columbia U

(RightWing.org) – As Jewish students face harassment, intimidation, and even violence on American college campuses, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) visited one of the worst trouble spots. Johnson spoke to some of the students affected by far-left protests at Columbia University, where the situation has gotten so bad the college has abandoned in-person classes for the rest of the semester. Meanwhile, Democrat politicians are trying to minimize the scale of the problem.

On April 21, a rabbi told Jewish students at New York City’s Columbia University they should stay at home because the campus is now too dangerous. NYPD officers and private security guards have been drafted in to provide security through Passover. Over a hundred protesters have been arrested. However, while President Biden and other Democrats have condemned the threats and intimidation, none of them have actually visited the college.

Speaker Johnson clearly thought that wasn’t good enough, and on April 24, he and three GOP colleagues –- Representatives Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY), Anthony D’Sesposito (R-NY), and Mike Lawler (R-NY) –- went to Columbia to meet Jewish students. The meeting wasn’t open to the press, but afterward, he held a press conference and gave a powerful speech denouncing the “mob” behind the protests and intimidation.

Johnson warned the activists that what they’re doing isn’t the sort of respectful debate that belongs on college campuses and condemned how they’re “intimidating and shouting down” anyone with a different point of view. He said their behavior is “not American” and doesn’t respect the First Amendment, and suggested bringing in the National Guard to restore order at the college if the intimidation doesn’t stop.

Left-wing Democrats quickly condemned Johnson’s speech. Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN), whose daughter was arrested for trespassing at Columbia on April 18, accused him of endangering the lives of the protesters, while New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D) said he was “politicizing” the demonstrations.

It’s not clear why Hochul thinks a far-left protest against Israel wasn’t political already. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) also attacked Johnson’s speech. Of course, the Democrat leadership did nothing to stop their legislators from supporting the mob that’s terrorizing the Columbia campus.
