(RightWing.org) – The border control crisis has been spiraling out of control for years now. In Fiscal Year 2023 alone, there were 2.4 million migrant encounters at the US-Mexico border and statistics from the House Committee on Homeland Security notes that there have been 7.5 million nationwide encounters since President Joe Biden took office. Texas is one state that has been hit hard by the Biden Administration’s border policies and Governor Greg Abbott (R) has had no problem taking matters into his own hands. As part of his Operation Lone Star, he is now directing the state’s National Guard to install an anti-climb barrier (ACB).
What Is an Anti-Climb Barrier?
An anti-climb barrier is designed to prevent people from breaching an area. In this case, the Texas National Guard Engineer Special Response Teams erected an 8-foot anti-climb fence, to make it doubly effective in keeping migrants from reaching Texas land. The fence, located near Brownsville, is designed in such a way that it’s impossible to lean a ladder on it to scale the structure.
Texas National Guard Captain Chris Daniel said the barrier is meant to help other federal agencies “intercept those bad actors and stop them from manipulating” the obstructions, which are placed along the Rio Grande River. The hope is that it will help slow down the number of illegal crossings. The teams are also reinforcing the fence and the other barriers they put up previously with concertina wire.
Texas In and Out of Court
Abbott believes he is doing the right thing, picking up the slack where the Biden Administration is clearly failing. However, the state has been in and out of court over the placement of concertina wire, which the Border Patrol is actively seeking to remove.
In October, a federal judge blocked the Biden Administration from removing the wire, but that was overturned in November when US District Judge Alia Moses said Texas failed to provide adequate evidence that the federal government was violating the law. She was clear, though, in saying that despite the law falling in its favor, “it does not excuse their culpable and duplicitous conduct.” She also relayed a message saying that the fact that Border Patrol has to cut migrants out of the wire to save their lives is a problem of the administration’s own doing.
Abbott has made it clear that he is prepared to take the case all the way to the Supreme Court if need be.
