Speaker Johnson Faces New Threats to His Job

(RightWing.org) – The House of Representatives hit the ground running when it returned from its two-week Easter recess on April 9. The body faces several important issues, like proposed spending cuts to companies and budget requests from the US Navy, GAO, Capitol Police, and the Department of Homeland Security. In addition, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) faces new threats to his position as lawmakers enter potentially treacherous waters with the general elections looming later this year.

Media outlets reported that Johnson faces bipartisan pressure to address the stalled military aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. Increasingly, hard-line Freedom Caucus members and MAGA Republicans push back on the idea of providing additional funding for the Ukrainian war effort as fighting works its way through its third year.

Likewise, Johnson risks angering other GOP lawmakers who are concerned about his willingness to compromise with House Democrats and the White House on essential funding measures. For instance, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) filed a motion to vacate the speaker shortly after the House approved a wide-sweeping $1.2 trillion spending package to avoid a government shutdown in late March.

Greene told reporters at the time that she didn’t set a timeline for calling for a vote on Johnson’s ouster. She said she intended the motion to vacate as “more of a warning and a pink slip” than a notice of her intention to push for a resolution to remove him.

Some media outlets report that Johnson faces a risk that the Georgia lawmaker would call for a vote if he makes good on his previous vow to pass a new aid package for Ukraine. If Greene decided to push for Johnson’s removal, House members would only have two days to act on her motion.

Greene recently indicated that it wasn’t a matter of House members deciding to remove the speaker. Instead, it was a matter of when. However, House Minority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) recently stated he didn’t believe lawmakers would remove Johnson.
