Household Staple Recalled for Allergen Contamination

(RightWing.org) – People like to stock up on food staples during the holiday season and into the new year as stores offer incredible savings trying to salvage their annual earnings statements and get a head start on first-quarter figures. However, tracking expiration dates and keeping abreast of government product warnings is essential. For instance, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a food recall two days before Thanksgiving 2023.

On November 21, the FDA announced an urgent notice detailing Seneca Foods Corporation’s voluntary recall of some of its turkey gravy products. Seneca’s press release advised consumers that its Hy-Vee Turkey Gravy actually contained beef gravy. Particularly concerning, that product potentially contains a “soy allergen” that isn’t listed on the product’s label.

The FDA warned that individuals who suffer from severe soy sensitivity or allergies “run the risk” of experiencing a “serious or life-threatening allergic reaction” if they consume any of those products.

The recall only extends to the company’s turkey gravy packaged in 12-ounce jars bearing the UPC Code 75450-03608. Likewise, only two lot numbers were involved in the mislabeling incident. They include product lots A3CG192M and A3CG162M.

Consumers should check their pantry/cabinets to see if they have any of those jars of mislabeled turkey gravy. They can return them for a full refund at the retailer where they purchased them. Anyone with additional concerns or questions can contact Seneca’s consumer affairs office at 1-800-872-1110.

Fortunately, the recall impacted less than one percent of the company’s turkey gravy sold in Hi-Vee stores. Additionally, Seneca officials are “retrieving” any additional mislabeled products from its distribution system.

Consumers with questions about FDA recalls, safety alerts, and market withdrawals can visit the agency’s website. Likewise, the FDA lists links to products categorized by drugs and human health products, products used for animal health, biologics, and medical devices here.
