As well as a boost to sick pay and unemployment for workers affected by the virus, the relief bill signed last week will give a stimulus payment to almost every US citizen and legal resident alien. The basic payment is $1,200 per person, with additional benefits of up to $500 per dependent child. Payments are reduced for high earners who make more than $75,000 a year, and for a single person with no children would hit zero at $99,000.
Mnuchin says anyone who already has bank information on file with the government should get their payments by direct deposit within three weeks. The Treasury Department also plans to set up a web portal so anyone who hasn’t already supplied bank details can do that, instead of waiting for a check in the mail.
