Whoopi Goldberg Attacks Ron DeSantis: “He Wants to Be a Dictator”

(RightWing.org) – On Wednesday, July 19, the panelists on ABC’s “The View” discussed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and his response to the recent revelation that his Republican primary opponent Donald Trump received a “target letter” from Special Counsel Jack Smith on Sunday. Co-host and noted lefty liberal Whoopi Goldberg lashed out at DeSantis’ defense of the former president, claiming it revealed his authoritarian aspirations.

DeSantis told CNN host Jake Tapper that he didn’t think it served the national interest to wage a presidential campaign based on what happened in January 2021. Instead, he said he wanted “focus on looking forward.”

Goldberg responded to his remark in general terms, telling the viewing audience she found it curious that “these people” — presumably Republicans? — were incapable of admitting that “anything wrong” occurred during the so-called January 6 insurrection.

According to Goldberg, they won’t speak out because they “want to do the same thing.” Turning her attention to DeSantis, she said he wanted the “same kind of country” that sparked that incident. Twisting the knife a little deeper, she accused him of also wanting to be a “dictator.” Continuing, Goldberg said she never imagined the US would draw this close to a “dictatorship” during her lifetime.

Co-host Alyssa Griffin jumped in, claiming that Trump’s team is on the record, stating he plans to expand the power of the presidency and the executive branch during his second term. Sara Haines jumped into the conversation, adding that the former president wanted to “eliminate checks and balances.”

Goldberg responded, “That is called dictatorship.”

It remains unclear whether the federal grand jury overseeing Smith’s investigation will issue a true bill of indictment or not. Trump acknowledged that individuals receiving a target letter typically face arrest and prosecution in a recent post on his Truth Social site.

However, things could move quickly. Trump’s lawyers met with Justice Department officials on June 5 to discuss the status of its ongoing investigation into the controversy surrounding the Mar-a-Lago documents. Four days later, the former president posted a Truth on his social media platform announcing his lawyers had received an indictment from the special counsel’s office. Something similar could happen this time as well.
