US Lawmakers Offer Bonus Cash to Employees to Go Back to Work

(RightWing.org) – Across the US, employers are struggling to find staff. Thanks to the Biden administration continuing to hand out extra unemployment benefits until September, many people would rather stay at home and be paid to do nothing. Now, a bipartisan group of lawmakers wants to hand out even more money to bribe people back to work.

On June 18, Representatives Peter Meijer (R-MI), Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) and Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) introduced a new bill that will give government handouts to anyone who finds work after being unemployed. The SUPPORT For New Workers Act would make weekly payments of $180, which Sherrill says are to help people with “childcare issues” and “barriers to reentering the workforce.”

That’s the sort of language you’d expect from a liberal, but Meijer came closer to the real issue when he described the current administration’s unemployment benefits as an incentive for “Americans to stay home rather than get back to work.”

If it passes, this bill will reduce the incentive to stay at home by making work relatively more lucrative. On the other hand, it will also mean borrowing even more money that taxpayers have to repay somewhere down the road. What’s America come to when we have to bribe people to go back to work and earn a living?
