(RightWing.org) – Illegal immigration is a challenge that’s been with America for a very long time. It doesn’t help when a presidential candidate who declared he’ll support a free-for-all on the border wins the election and then follows through on his promises. Over 1 million people illegally have crossed the southern border since President Joe Biden was inaugurated on January 20.
As the administration continues to turn its back on the border, it’s expressing concern about a rise in COVID-19 cases and is considering re-instituting a mask recommendation. However, Biden doesn’t seem overly concerned about COVID-19 jumping the river at the border. Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott is taking matters into his own hands. Ultimately, it could be a showdown between the Lone Star State and the federal government as one tries to protect its citizens and the other looks the other way.
Texas Starts Arresting People Crossing the Border
Gov. Abbott’s plan to institute a state crackdown on illegal immigration is now coming into view. On Thursday, July 22, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice announced that state troopers arrested at least 10 people who illegally crossed the border. The state is charging them with various crimes, from trespassing to destruction of private property. Law enforcement officials transported the alleged criminals to an empty state prison facility in Dilley, TX. The facility can hold 950 people.
Unlike the Biden administration, Abbott announced that those who break the law in Texas will be sent to jail instead of being released. The governor added that the state is adding more law enforcement officers, a more substantial National Guard presence, and more jails. Officials say that between 100 and 200 people could be arrested per day.
On June 10, Abbott said Biden’s reckless illegal immigration policies were creating a humanitarian crisis. Record levels of people crossed the borders and drugs streamed into the state at unprecedented levels. He acknowledged that it’s the federal government’s responsibility to protect the nation. However, in its absence, the governor said the state would take all actions legally available to protect its communities.
In addition to arresting illegal aliens, Texas will also build a secure border wall and finish what the Trump administration started.
Conflict With the Federal Government?
There are more questions than answers about Texas’ role in illegal immigration. They can’t indefinitely detain illegals, and it’s unknown if federal immigration authorities will eventually allow or even help unlawful immigrants leave the state once they are released. Additionally, will Texas be able to handle thousands upon thousands of cases in the state court system?
The Biden administration is putting states and their citizens under severe strain by not protecting the border. In June alone, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) acknowledged they detained 188,829 people who crossed the southern border illegally. It’s a problem in need of a solution from the federal government.
In the meantime, it appears some states will do all they can to protect their citizens’ property, lives, and futures. If the Biden administration chooses, it can seek court relief on the wall as a federal issue. It’s not clear if it will oppose Texas’ state sovereignty to do so. Regardless, last month Texas sheriffs sued the Biden administration for preventing the arrests and deportations of serious criminal illegal immigrants.
This story could evolve and get interesting.
