SoCal Sheriff Will NOT Enforce Newsom's Lockdown

( – Millions of Californians were threatened with the state’s toughest lockdown rules yet on Sunday night, December 6, as Governor Gavin Newsom (D) announced a new set of restrictions. There’s good news for Orange County residents, though, because their local sheriff doesn’t seem too enthusiastic about the latest crackdown.

Despite previous draconian restrictions of civil liberties, California now has more coronavirus cases than ever before, so Newsom has decided to double down on his failed tactics. Once 85% of intensive care beds in a region are full, harsh stay at home orders will activate. At the current rate of infection, four of the state’s five regions would fall under the new restrictions by mid-week.

Under the new restrictions, bars, gyms, hair salons and “non-essential” stores will close again, all offices except essential services will be shut down, and new restrictions on travel around the state will be introduced.

However, Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes says his officers won’t enforce Newsom’s order. “Compliance with health orders is a matter of personal responsibility and not a matter of law enforcement,” he said. In a statement, he confirmed that deputies would only respond to reports of criminal behavior — social distancing and mask violations aren’t crimes.
