Secret $220 Million Deal Linked to Communist China

( – Many people are getting worried about the way China’s communist regime is buying influence in American universities. Beijing has invested billions in leading American colleges — that we know about. Worryingly, it looks like there could be a lot more money involved because some colleges aren’t reporting Chinese investments.

On May 22, The Daily Beast reported that the University of California, Berkeley is building a joint research lab in China, and it’s been given $220 million in funding by the city of Shenzhen — but it hasn’t declared the money to the US government. A federal disclosure law requires universities to report any funding of more than $250,000 from China and other hostile states, but academics don’t like the law and are constantly fighting against government scrutiny of where their money is coming from.

Berkeley is working with Tsinghua University, one of China’s most prestigious technical schools, to build the Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI). The plan is to build a state-of-the-art research facility where Berkeley academics will teach Chinese PhD students. Many of the technical subjects the institute will teach have potential national security implications — and it’s being massively funded by the Chinese Communist Party.

According to the Daily Beast, Berkeley says it hasn’t reported the Chinese funding, which was agreed to in 2018, because the institute is still being built. That violates the US Department of Education’s rules, which say foreign funding has to be disclosed within six months of signing.

However, assistant vice chancellor Dan Mogulof, in an interview with the Daily Caller, is now claiming that the Beast article is flawed and the college hasn’t received any funding from anyone in China. However, he admitted that Berkeley has received $22 million from Tsinghua University, which is controlled by the CCP — and it didn’t report that either. It looks like liberal colleges are ignoring rules that are supposed to protect valuable US research from reaching communist agents.
