(RightWing.org) – Russian President Vladimir Putin might have expected a quick and easy victory when he ordered his troops into Ukraine last month, but that’s not how it’s gone. Ukrainian resistance has been tenacious. Now, some analysts think Russia’s casualties are already approaching those the US suffered in the two-decade Global War on Terror.
On March 9, a US official told journalists as many as 5,000 or 6,000 Russian soldiers could have died since Putin launched his invasion on February 24. At that rate, it’s only a matter of days before the death toll exceeds the 7,057 US troops estimated to have died in Iraq and Afghanistan between 2001 and 2019.

The official stressed it’s challenging to tell exactly how many Russians have died because the Kremlin isn’t releasing any numbers. The estimate of as many as 6,000 is at the high end, and the real number could be as low as 3,500, which is still higher than the 2,461 Americans who died in Afghanistan. One thing’s for sure, though: With the Russians stepping up the pace of their attacks again and hundreds of combat vehicles now preparing for a massive assault on Kyiv, the number is sure to grow fast.
