Ron DeSantis Vows New Restrictions on Abortion

DeSantis Announces NEW RESTRICTIONS – Coming Soon!

(RightWing.org) – With its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization the US Supreme Court struck down the landmark Roe v. Wade (1973) ruling that gave abortion a nationwide constutional right. Florida’s Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, joined a growing list of conservative state leaders vowing to expand their states’ current restriction on abortion in the wake of that decision.

On June 24, DeSantis issued a brief statement applauding the Supreme Court’s decision to return the issue of regulating abortion to the states. “The prayers of millions [of Americans] have been answered,” he wrote, adding that the ruling restored “a sense of hope that every life counts.”

DeSantis also vowed to defend its current pro-life reforms in the state courts now that the Supreme Court ruling effectively terminated federal meddling in state-sponsored measures restricting abortion. He concluded his remarks by promising to “expand” Florida’s “pro-life protections” and to “stand for life” by supporting family services, including adoption, child welfare assistance, and foster care programs.

Abortion currently remains legal in Florida up to the 24th week of pregnancy. However, a new measure (CS/HB 5 – Reducing Fetal and Infant Mortality) barring abortion after 15 weeks goes into effect on July 1. Gov. DeSantis signed the bill into law on April 14.

What do you think of the efforts by DeSantis and other Republican governors to increase their states’ abortion restrictions?
