Ron DeSantis Pushes Powerful New Gun Law

(RightWing.org) – While the Biden administration tries to find new ways to restrict Second Amendment rights, Florida’s popular GOP governor is pushing hard to protect and expand them. The state’s next legislative session will probably see a new bill to allow constitutional carry. Florida Democrats are already complaining, but will they be able to stop the law?

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) is calling on state legislators to pass a law to end the need for concealed carry permits in the state. DeSantis is keen to bring in constitutional carry before deciding whether to run for president in 2024, and that means getting a law voted through and signed in the next session.

Can he do it? Yes, he probably can. Republicans have a supermajority in the Florida legislature and can force the bill through. Democrats are already trying to whip up public anxiety, though, with Florida House Minority leader Fentrice Driskell claiming the move would “make our communities less safe,” according to KFLA.com.

There are signs this tactic might be working. In Miami-Dade, Florida’s most populous county, even Republican voters tilt heavily against scrapping carry permits; 65% of them would oppose constitutional carry. DeSantis can almost certainly push the law through. The real question is if he’ll go ahead with it in the face of opposition from his own grassroots supporters.
