(RightWing.org) – On May 27, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo gave a momentous announcement about Hong Kong. After China implemented heavy-handed legislation regarding “national security,” Pompeo said that Hong Kong is no longer an autonomous entity. He said that the US will side with the region, a decision which will have long-lasting implications as the US-China relationship deteriorates.
Today, I reported to Congress that Hong Kong is no longer autonomous from China, given facts on the ground. The United States stands with the people of Hong Kong.

The new policy in question states that the National People’s Congress (NPC) will review legislation criminalizing anti-government activities. Last year’s massive eruption over a proposed extradition law resulted in months-long protests as Hong Kong attempted to retain whatever sovereignty it has. However, while the protests came to an end, China continued to tighten its grip over Hong Kong, as demonstrated by this recent policy.
Pompeo deems that Hong Kong cannot remain a key financial hub in the region as long as this legislation remains in place. He hopes that China will back down from its position now. Even if it does, how long before the communist country attempts to seize control over Hong Kong through other means?
According to Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany, President Trump is “displeased” at the actions taken by the Chinese government.
