Poll: Should Higher Education Be Free to the Public?

Here’s the Background Story:

College students continue to attend their classes; meanwhile, some prospective students are turning away from the campus to educate themselves. Do you believe that higher education should become a public service?

Here Are the Contributing Factors:

One of America’s greatest strengths is the quality of its workforce. This is the backbone of our robust economy that’s able to influence countries across the globe. Higher education is the key to bolstering our workforce, but gradual increases in tuition prevent many prospective students from enrolling in college.

Should a financial barrier get in the way of our youth trying to obtain the education they need? As with most things, there are two sides to the coin.

Nothing in life is free, even education. Colleges can’t operate without financial support from students, the government, or other outside sources. Teachers need to make a living like the rest of us. In fact, many teachers are underpaid for their invaluable services. It’s a harsh reality of the teaching industry’s current state; hopefully, that will change soon.

Proponents of free public education have a different view. One could argue that higher education is mandatory to keep up in the modern job market. The information age changed the game for everyone; machines are replacing humans in the workplace.

Flipping burgers will become an obsolete skill when mass-produced robots go into full-swing production. The digital world isn’t immune from automation either; machine learning is transforming countless computer-based job markets.

What do we do when robots take our jobs? We oversee the machines and ensure they’re functioning correctly. The skills needed to accomplish this goal require more than a mere high school education. Sure, you can learn a staggering amount on your own through the internet, but that’s not enough; solo-learning isn’t adequate preparation for highly-technical jobs.
