Former South Carolina Governor and US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Hayley has angrily criticized liberal journalists for misrepresenting her views of the Confederate battle flag. Last week, Haley talked to Glenn Beck about mass murderer Dylann Roof and the resulting debate about removing the flag from the South Carolina statehouse.
Jason Campbell, a researcher at Media Matters, tweeted that Haley had told Beck the Confederate battle flag was about “service, and sacrifice, and heritage” until Roof “hijacked” it. That led to criticism from media figures including Meghan McCain, who called Haley “insensitive and ignorant.”

In fact, what Haley did was talk about how other people saw the flag, correctly pointing out that while some saw it as a racist symbol there were others who saw it as a marker of service and sacrifice. It’s ridiculous to criticize a politician for stating facts — but that’s what Haley was faced with.
