New Setback for Wall

New Setback for Wall

Opponents of President Trump have thrown up yet another legal roadblock in his attempts to secure the southern border. A Texas judge ruled Friday that the president’s emergency funding package is illegal because it spends more than Congress authorized.

The decision was made by Judge David Briones of the US District Court for the Western District of Texas. Briones was appointed by President Clinton and took on the case when El Paso County and the Border Network for Human Rights (a Left-wing campaign group) sued the administration.

President Trump immediately condemned the decision as judicial overreach and vowed to keep fighting to build the wall. So far 71 miles of the new barrier have been constructed, and the plan is to build 450 miles more by the end of next year. It’s hard to say what effect Friday’s decision will have; Briones didn’t issue an immediate injunction but gave all parties just over a week to come up with proposals.
