New Funding for Gun Violence Research

New Funding for Gun Violence Research

Our government has agreed on a spending budget to support gun violence research for the first time in over 20 years.

The agreed-upon sum of $25 million will be evenly split between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Reception Among Experts

The last time Congress passed a funding bill for gun violence research was to the tune of $50 million. In the words of Dr. Mark Rosenberg, who ran CDC projects in the 1990s, the $25 million now allocated is “absolutely not” enough. Still, he simultaneously calls it “a gesture of historic proportions” and “the most meaningful step that federal lawmakers have taken to addressing gun violence as a public health emergency.”

Ted Alcorn, an associate at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University, is also concerned about the lack of gun violence research. According to a publication that he authored in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Internal Medicine in 2017, research on this topic fell by 64% since the Dickey Amendment was passed in 1996. Alcorn shared his thoughts and concerns about the lack of research.

TEST

“For too long researchers have learned to assume that the CDC does not support gun violence research. They need an affirmative push from Congress to say not only you can, but you shall support this kind of work.”

The Dickey Amendment

Ever since the Dickey Amendment was passed, federally funded research that would “advocate or promote gun control” was forbidden. Gun research in its entirety wasn’t outlawed, but the precedent was set: whoever took up the mantle of gun violence research had to tread carefully if they wanted federal funding.

Organizations like the CDC and NIH have had to make do with what they previously received or turn to other sources. For example, $9.8 million was granted towards researching this issue by the National Collaborative on Gun Violence Research. Still, this is not nearly enough and, as a result of the Dickey Amendment, research on the subject largely halted.

A Renewed Interest

However, times have changed a great deal over the past two decades.

TEST

While anti-gun and pro-gun Americans clash in ideologies, researchers like Roseberg and Alcorn believe that too much time and energy has been spent “fighting each other than fighting the problem.”

“Year after year Congress has been basically maintained[sic] this ban out of this kind of faulty idea that gun violence research has somehow partisan and so as a result it is one of the most understudied causes of death in the United States and it’s just really fantastic to see some movement from Congress.”

-Jonathan Metzl, professor and director of Center for Medicine, Health and Society at Vanderbilt University

Researchers are excited to study gun violence once again with this new allocation of financial resources. We’ll keep you posted on any major findings they uncover.

  1. Right now , there are enough studies to choke a horse on this subject.
Here is the problem; the talking baboons have taken over. Yes, speaking from a bottomless well of ignorance , we are made to suffer one crackpot solution after another . What do you expect when you cannot identify the problem ? Follow these;” Guns off the street. ” Okay , take off a garment , run outside , throw it over that gun , and capture it, ROFLMAO. Next, “Stop Gun Violence ,” a little better . Apparently not all guns are violent, just get the violent ones,ROFLMAO. Next ,” Gun Safety ,” I guess some guns are not safe, like a mad dog , you don’t know who they will shoot next ROFLMAO.
These all have a few things in common : SEND MONEY , INSTANT VICTIM EXPERT STATUS , AND NEXT TO ZERO KNOWLEDGE ON WHAT THEY ARE SPOUTING.
HAVE YOU HEARD ANYONE ADVOCATE HAVING A PERSON OR PERSONS ASSIGNED TO OPEN AND LOCK OUTER SCHOOL DOORS,AND A PERSON OR PERSONS TO CHECK THAT, CLASSROOM DOORS, REINFORCED DOORS , MULTIPLE LOCK DOORS ?
OF COURSE NOT . THE FIRST QUALIFICATION TO BE A BABOON IS NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE SPOUTING ON.
THE VAST MAJORITY OF THESE MASS MURDERS ARE CRAZY PEOPLE , WHO HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED BY THE FOURTH OR FIFTH GRADE. THESE MURDERERS ARE CRAZY PEOPLE. THEY ARE NOT STUPID . WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU READ ABOUT A MASS SHOOTING INSIDE A POLICE STATION( THEY CAN SHOOT BACK ) ; IN A PLACE OF WORSHIP ( LOADED WITH POLICE AND FIREFIGHTERS WHOARE USUALLY ARMED) ; IN A MALL ( Same). NO, DEFINETLY NOT STUPID , AND DEFINETLY CRAZY RELIGIOUS.
CRAZY PEOPLE HAVE TO BE PUT IN INSTITUTIONS; BABOONS , GUNS HAVE ZERO TO DO WITH THE SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM.

  2. Money should have been for the research of mental illnesses that most murders suffer from and also the money could be better used to research liberalism and its effects on ones brains ability to ignore the truth and cause intolerant behavior and immature reactions to any thing they don’t agree with and also Trump derangement syndrome that all of the democrats seem to be suffering from it makes them react ignorantly with no thought about legal repercussions or there legality.

  3. Nothing good can come from this. You will have nothing but leftists involved. Never a good idea. Since, you all believe $25 million is no where near enough to do your research, I’ll do it for $20 million – quickly and with truer results.

  4. I am pretty tired of funding multi million dollar research studies. how about a research bill to figure out why a bartender (no disrespect) is leading the democratic party. Its kind of amazing that when everything is great, dems think they can do it better. its really funny that on a 160K salary for working when they deem appropriate, politicians some how become multi millionaires

  5. This research is going to turn out a lot like global warming research-the government gives money for the study, but then suggests the “acceptable” results for the study. If a researcher is so dumb he gives the wrong answer, no money next year. This has been the norm for global warming research since 1980 and it leads to fudging data, going back and redoing history, closing research stations in colder climates so the average temperature appears to be increasing and promising us climate catastrophe instead of useful research. Need proof: In 2013, Obama had the CDC do a research study on gun violence, when he got his study he didn’t like the results (the data virtually mirrored the results of earlier research produced and reported on by John Lott-more guns equals less crime), so Obama buried the report and it died until it was discovered anew in 2018. CDC stopped doing gun research immediately after this report was published. If we give them a chance to start again, I’ll bet they’ve learned their lesson.

  6. Another waste of taxpayer money. These politicians don’t care about wasteful spending because it’s not their money. It’s a way for them to funnel money into their own pockets!

  7. Just another attempt by the anti-gun nuts to use my taxes to fund and propagate their anti-gun agenda.

Instead of saying “Researchers are excited to study gun violence once again with this new allocation of financial resources.” I would say “Researchers are excited to study anti-gun measures once again with this new allocation of financial resources.”

  8. More people are being stabbed to death then shot morons FBI report shows violent crime down in 2018 stabbing to death 5%, shooting with long guns 2% gun control laws ain’t going to get it done morons deplorable veteran

  9. The government needs $25million taxpayer dollars to figure out that you can’t slaughter human beings in the womb & not expect killing to spill out into the streets & classrooms?

Or that Propaganda media & the Democrats’ hatred for half of America, telling swaths of Americans they’re victims, & appealing to their basest instincts doesn’t stoke violence?

Or that removing the moral guidance of the Bible, no consequences for feral behavior in the classroom & going light on crime perpetuates more violence?

Or that giving cell phones to 8-yr. olds, online life as a replacement for community, & kids carted from one activity to another instead of just going outside to play, explore & dream is harmful? There’s nothing dumber than gov’t to try & put together cause & effect.

  10. More waste of tax payer money, we already know why people go out and shoot other people and how they get the guns.Giving a bunch of politicians untold amounts of money to research something they know nothing about is totally ludicrous, but that would be business as usual in dc, there experts at nothing???? Guns used in violent crimes are illegal, illegally bought, stolen, or taken from someone else illegally, research is over..If the perpetrators have never been check out like they should be, it’s not the guns laws it’s there not being enforced cuz it mite offend somebody !!

  11. I DONT TRUST ANY GOVT SUPPORTED AGENCY DOING A STUDY ON GUN VIOLENCE AND GUN OWNERSHIP. WILL THEY BE NEUTRAL? NOT LIKELY. NOT MANY GOVT STUDIES ARE? WILL THEY PROCEED WITHOUT PRE CONCEIVED LIBERAL IDEOLOGY? I WONDER. WILL THE LIKES OF PELOSI, SANDERS AND OTHER LEFTIST TRY TO IMPOSE THEIR INFLUENCE ON THE STUDY? (I DIDNT HAVE TO ASK THAT QUESTION, DID I)

  12. I when I was a senior in high school, a girl in my class said they were living Hawaii when Pearl Harbor was bombed, and her Dad walked their fence line with a gun to protect the family. If we get invaded by North Korea, iran, Etc. How are we suppose to protect ourselves if we don’t have any guns? I’ve heard when asked, some countries say the reason they don’t attack us is because we have too many guns.

  13. The “powers”, whoever that is, need to strictly enforce existing gun laws before wasting more Tax Payer’s dollars on another worthless study!

My long term experience with studies of any sort, other than physical tests or non-subjective interpretation of facts, only end up with the researchers regurgitating what those in power want to hear to support actions or decisions they want to take!

  14. Research what? Guns in the hands of sadists, mental deviates, predators, kill? We have laws in place, and like most things they fall into cracks because of law enforcements territorial Disputes, miscommunication and apathy. If all guns were removed from public ownership, those that want them for killing would get them. Research & more laws are not the answer.
