Minneapolis to Vote on Abolishing Police

(RightWing.org) – After the devastating events surrounding the death of George Floyd last month, Minneapolis officials are looking to take drastic action. The city council could vote by a veto-proof majority to abolish the city’s police department, with 9 of 13 members openly in support of the radical move.

Council President Lisa Bender and eight of her colleagues spoke at a protest Sunday and said they want to end the city’s “toxic relationship” with its cops. They claim they want to build a new model of community safety to replace traditional policing.

Mayor Jacob Frey is resisting calls to shut down the department, and was jeered by protestors yesterday after refusing to defund cops. Polls show only 20% of Americans want to see less spending on law enforcement, and while some radical politicians support it – with New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D) being a high profile example. With little to no constituent support, any serious move in that direction only boosts President Trump’s chances of re-election.
