(RightWing.org) – In a shocking decision, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court has picked an openly biased left-wing lawyer to head up the reform of the FBI’s controversial surveillance activities.
David Kris, who worked for the Obama administration, has defended the Bureau in the face of a Department of Justice report that harshly criticized its unaccountable surveillance programs. Now he’s been put in charge of fixing something he’s spent months claiming wasn’t even broken.
Kris’s appointment caused immediate outrage among critics of the FBI. House Intelligence Committee ranking member Devin Nunes (R, CA) said:
“It’s hard to imagine a worse person the FISC could have chosen outside Comey, McCabe, or Schiff. It’s a ridiculous choice. The FBI lied to the FISC, and to help make sure that doesn’t happen again, the FISC chose an FBI apologist who denied and defended those lies. The FISC is setting its own credibility on fire.”
The trigger for surveillance reform was a memo produced by Nunes in 2018, which alleged abuses committed by the FBI against presidential aide Carter Page. Kris was one of the loudest critics of the memo — but the DOJ’s Inspector General later found that the memo was correct and the FBI had repeatedly lied to the FISC. Much of Kris’s support for the Bureau was published on Lawfare, a leftist blog run by a friend of James Comey.
