(RightWing.org) – Basketball legend Kobe Bryant was killed along with eight others, including his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, on Sunday morning when his helicopter crashed in California.
Eyewitnesses say the Sikorsky S-76B was seen flying low near Calabasas, around 30 miles from Los Angeles, in foggy conditions, shortly before an explosion was heard. Firefighters had to put out fires that burned through about an acre of dry brush around the crash site.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, unfavorable weather conditions may have played a factor in the crash. In fact, LAPD’s own helicopters were grounded due to excessive fog.
Bryant was the fourth-highest scorer in the history of basketball and his 20-year career is seen as one of the sport’s most successful. After retiring in 2016, he started a production company and also encouraged young people to become politically active. Although he didn’t broadcast his own politics, he urged people to understand the issues and vote for whoever they felt they should support.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims today.
