Kevin McCarthy Tapes Put His Career In Doubt

(RightWing.org) – Since the midterm elections, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has been gearing up to replace Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) as House Speaker, but his political career is suddenly hanging in the balance. Leaked tapes hint that in the days following last year’s Capitol riot, McCarthy conspired to force President Trump to resign — and now they’re being used to undermine his position in the House Republican Caucus.

On April 21, MSNBC’s “Rachel Maddow Show” broadcast leaked audio tapes that seemed to show Representative McCarthy telling renegade Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney (R-WY) on January 10 he was going to advise Trump to step down. On the tapes, Cheney can be heard asking McCarthy if there was any sign Trump was planning to resign. McCarthy replied that he didn’t think so, but added, “I’m going to call him.”

McCarthy has strongly denied saying he was going to suggest Trump’s resignation, but why has this old story surfaced again now?

There’s a faction in the GOP that classes McCarthy as a RINO along with anti-Trump Republicans like Cheney. They’d like to portray the tapes as evidence of a conspiracy to remove the president. In fact, the audio also supports the idea of legislators discussing the situation just days after a shocking riot — something you’d expect them to be doing under the circumstances. But, with the tense and ultra-polarized state of US politics right now, the scandal could still threaten McCarthy’s career.
