Illinois Plan Could Allow Illegal Immigrants to Become Cops

(RightWing.org) – Illinois Liberals have passed a bill they say would solve the recruitment crisis facing police departments in the state. There’s just one problem — their solution is to let illegal immigrants become cops. Conservatives aren’t happy at the thought of Americans being arrested by people who don’t even have a right to be in this country.

The Chicago Police Department is in trouble. According to Fox News, more than 300 of its officers have resigned or retired since the beginning of the year, and they can’t recruit enough new ones to replace them. Now left-wing legislators want to make up police numbers by hiring illegal immigrants and giving them guns and the power to arrest people.

On July 28, the Illinois State Legislature passed HB 3751, which amends state law on hiring police officers. Right now, the law says it’s unlawful for sheriffs to hire someone as a cop “who is not a citizen of the United States.” The bill adds “or who is legally allowed to work in the United States under federal law” — and that means illegal immigrants who are enrolled in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) process are now eligible.

If Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signs the bill, it will come into force on January 1, 2024, and the state will join several others that allow non-citizens to be cops — but so far, only Hawaii allows DACA migrants to join the police.

Federal law restricts federal law enforcement jobs to citizens but leaves it up to states to set their own rules; most of them have opted to impose a citizenship requirement. Maryland and Tennessee allow legal permanent residents who have an honorable discharge from the US military to become police officers, while nine other states accept legal aliens who have the right to work in the US.
