(RightWing.org) – The US Department of Agriculture announced on April 20 it would extend the coronavirus-era free school lunch program for K-to-12 students through June 2022. The Biden administration initiated the program as part of its plan to reopen schools safely. Apparently, that isn’t enough for progressive “Squad” member Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN).
Omar has been pushing for permanent free school lunches for a while now. On May 7, she introduced the Universal School Meals Program Act of 2021 along with Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), and Rep. Gwen Moore (D-WI).

That bill would amend the Child Nutrition Act of 1966 and the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act to make breakfast and lunch free for ALL school-aged children regardless if they come from upper middle-class or even wealthy families. It would also expand the program to include dinner and a snack, all at taxpayers’ expense.
Omar renewed her demand for free school lunches in a Twitter post on June 22, suggesting that somehow her socialist bill could be passed yesterday.

Most school districts already provide free meals to low-income children, making it unclear what this proposal is trying to accomplish other than pushing another socialist concept on Americans disguised as a “good deed.”
