(RightWing.org) – When the Hunter Biden email scandal first broke in October 2020, plenty of Liberals rushed to defend the then-candidate’s son and pour sand on the flames of scandal. One of their firefighting jobs was an open letter signed by dozens of former senior intelligence officers, which claimed Hunter’s abandoned laptop had “the classic earmarks (sic) of a Russian information operation.”

Unfortunately for the 51 signatories, who included former directors of the CIA, NSA and DIA, it turned out the laptop really did belong to Hunter Biden and wasn’t Russian disinformation at all. That angered Conservatives, who unsurprisingly saw the letter itself as a disinformation op — aimed at protecting the Bidens, not attacking them.
Did the letter influence the results of the 2020 presidential election? It’s hard to say, but it was a close election, and if voters had known the laptop’s compromising contents were real, it could have had a serious impact.
Now GOP lawmakers want to know more about why the letter was written, and they’re going to the obvious source — the people who signed it. Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH) says the House has “a constitutional duty to do oversight” and hinted at future laws to prevent this sort of disinformation.
Jordan, as chair of the House Judiciary Committee, has wide-ranging powers to investigate current and former officials. It looks like he’s planning to use those powers; in mid-February, he called on the House to interview the letter’s signatories. What does he hope to find out? It’s hard to say, but if it turns out the Bidens were involved with the letter, it would infuriate Republicans.
Meanwhile, Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) said the letter had affected the election much more than anything Russia could have done and said the probe into Hunter’s behavior is “incredibly important.” He warned that only hostile states — China, Iran and Russia — know how much compromising material they have on Biden. This is the time for Congress to find out for itself.
