(RightWing.org) – Members of the 118th Congress took their oaths of office shortly after Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) secured the votes to take over as Speaker. The House Committee on Oversight and Accountability quickly began investigating the Biden family’s reported influence peddling. Committee Chair Rep. James Comer (R-KY) recently expanded the panel’s probe and has been expecting to receive material related to Hunter Biden’s business schemes from Eric Schwerin — an associate of the president’s son for more than 20 years.
On February 8, Comer sent a letter to Schwerin demanding records of any communication for a 12-year period ending on January 20, 2021, between himself and Joe Biden, his brother James Biden and his wife, Hunter Biden, and several of Hunter’s business associates. He also demanded records and documents related to various types of financial transactions concerning the same individuals with the addition of any known companies associated with Hunter Biden.
Comer sent similar letters to Hunter and James Biden, giving all three until February 22 to comply with the request.

The letter explained it was investigating whether the family “peddled” Joe Biden’s political influence to rake in millions of dollars at the expense of national security. It also detailed the committee’s plan to draft legislation strengthening “federal ethics laws regarding public officials and their families.”
Nevertheless, Hunter Biden’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, shot back a strongly worded letter claiming the Oversight Committee’s request for documents served “no legislative purpose,” according to news reports. However, he offered to sit down with Comer and ranking committee member Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) to determine whether his client had any information that may relate to “some legitimate purpose.” It remains unclear whether attorneys for James Biden and Schwerin reached out to the committee at that time.
The February 22 deadline passed, and neither the Bidens nor Schwerin produced the requested documents. However, Fox News reported a spokesperson for the House Oversight Committee confirmed the panel “received correspondence” from lawyers representing Hunter and James Biden and was still discussing the matter.

The spokesperson also confirmed the committee spoke with Schwerin’s lawyer and expected him to begin “producing documents… soon.” Oversight Committee member Rep. Pat Fallon (R-TX) told Fox News the panel could issue subpoenas for the information as a “last resort,” adding the likelihood of that outcome was getting “really close.”
