Tensions with Turkey have been strained lately, to say the least. Turkey’s assault on the Kurds and President Trump’s decision to impose sanctions in response have heated up the situation. To smooth things over, GOP Senators and the president met with Turkish President Recep Erdoğan.
Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Jim Risch (R-ID), among others, joined the two presidents at the White House this week. The specifics of the meeting have yet to be released, though Trump and Erdoğan gave a joint statement about the topics at hand. Below is the full press release, including a Q&A session with the media.
The situation in Syria, economic relations with Turkey and how to best deal with Kurdish rebels were but a few topics on the agenda. After this joint statement, the leaders went back to continue discussions. We’re eagerly awaiting the full release of details regarding Trump’s plans to stabilize this delicate situation.
