(RightWing.org) – Sometimes it seems like testing for COVID-19 has become the new national sport – but we might not be keeping score properly. The FDA recently warned not all the tests for sale give accurate results.
On March 1, the FDA issued a warning about unauthorized versions of three common Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) kits. RATs are the quickest and most common COVID tests, allowing viral detection from a nose or throat swab. Yet, the FDA doesn’t authorize all the tests currently available – and some of the unauthorized ones don’t work.
For at least the third time this year, the FDA is warning about an unauthorized COVID-19 test that could give false results. https://t.co/z2EOYpI7Fn

The FDA warning covers three tests:
- DiaTrust COVID-19 Ag Rapid Test produced by Celltrion USA Inc.
- STANDARD Q COVID-19 Ag Home Test provided by SD Biosensor Inc.
- Flowflex SARS-CoV-2 Antigen Rapid Test provided by ACON Laboratories.
The companies sell authorized versions of all of these, which the FDA says consumers can still use safely, but the unauthorized ones can give false results, and people shouldn’t use them.
According to the FDA, the unauthorized versions of the tests come in distinctively colored packaging. The Celltrion test has blue packaging, SD Biosensor’s kit is in a white and magenta box, and the ACON Labs test is in a green and white package. The agency is warning consumers to check the packaging before buying tests.
All three companies have issued recalls for unauthorized kits shipped in the US. This incident is at least the third time this year the FDA has pulled faulty tests from the market.
