California Gov. Gavin Newsom is expected to sign a bill that prohibits wild animals from appearing in circuses in the state.

Sen. Ben Hueso (D-CA) justifies this bill by pointing out the treatment of some of these circus animals. He believes that the animals are conditioned to perform tricks out of fear, and not because they were properly trained. Those who oppose this bill claim that their animals are well-treated while the state Senate voted to pass the measure 35-0.
If Gavin signs this bill, then California will join New Jersey and Hawaii in having legislation banning wild animals from participating in circus shows. Rodeos aren’t affected by this bill, and domesticated animals are still allowed in circuses.
