11 House GOP Demand Probe Into Chinese Infiltration

(RightWing.org) – Chinese-based malign foreign talent programs are increasingly becoming a concern for Republican lawmakers. The practice involves ongoing efforts by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to steal foreign technology and recruit scientists. Rep. Michael Waltz (R-FL) introduced a measure in September 2021 to prohibit the practice in the US. Most recently, he led a group of GOP members demanding a probe into Chinese infiltration of a vital American laboratory.

On October 6, Rep. Waltz issued a press release detailing a letter he sent to US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and the White House Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy regarding a recently released report by Strider Technologies, Inc. titled “The Los Alamos Club.” Ten additional House Republicans signed the letter, including House Science, Space and Technology Committee ranking member Rep. Frank Lucas (R-OK).

Strider’s report revealed that at least 162 scientists who previously worked at New Mexico’s Los Alamos National Laboratory subsequently returned to China to engage in military research. Waltz’s letter discussed the GOP lawmakers’ concerns that the CCP “had been successful at stealing… our research and development” through its ongoing malign foreign talents programs.

In his press release, Waltz emphasized the need to “put an immediate stop to [CCP] espionage efforts.” He also called for increased transparency regarding existing policies to protect critical research from Chinese officials and researchers.
