Dems Push for 1000% Tax on AR-15s

(RightWing.org) – Democrat lawmakers have launched a new attack on Second Amendment rights. Last week they introduced a House bill that, if it passed, would impose a massive, punitive tax on some of America’s most popular guns. Their goal is simple — to make firearms unaffordable for ordinary Americans.

On August 4, Representative Don Beyer (D-VA) introduced a bill that would charge a 1,000% excise tax on so-called “assault weapons” and “high capacity magazines.” If the bill becomes law, the price of a $500 sporting rifle, for example, will jump to $5,500 — and that’s close to the lowest price these popular guns are available for. A rifle that currently costs $2,000 would be hit with a staggering $20,000 tax bill.

This is the second time Beyer has tried to tax guns out of Americans’ hands. He first introduced the Assault Weapons Excise Act last June, promoting it with a speech riddled with hysterical claims about “weapons of war.” At the time, he openly admitted his goal was to “stem the flood” of gun sales.

The original bill failed to move forward after its introduction, even though the Democrats controlled the House at the time. With the lower chamber now controlled by the Republicans, it’s unlikely this second attempt will progress either, but House Democrats are still trying to increase the pressure for gun control. The day before Beyer introduced his bill, which is co-sponsored by 24 other liberal legislators, over 100 Democrats begged House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to pass gun control laws.

Like many gun control supporters, Beyer deliberately mixes up semi-automatic sporting rifles with actual assault rifles, which are capable of automatic fire. These have been strictly controlled since 1986, and the grandfathered examples still on the market cost from $20,000 upwards — about the same as a good AR15 will cost if Beyer gets his way. Has he really thought this through?
