Should we get rid of Columbus Day and replace it with a holiday to allow people to vote instead? At least one Democrat thinks so. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, officially the youngest woman to be voted into Congress, is already revealing her lack of experience in her social media posts. Of all the topics she could address, this was one of the first she chose to proselytize about.

Highlights

• The first tweet was simple: “How is Columbus Day a holiday but Election Day not?”
• After Daily Mail’s US Political Editor David Martosko drew parallels between how early on the job she was and the fact that she was already crying for more vacation time for Americans, she bit back. “While I would disagree with your complaint that Americans get too much vacation time (we work some of the longest hours of any dev country & have no Fed required paid leave), I am willing to compromise by eliminating Columbus Day to give Election Day off. See? I can be pliant.”
• Ocasio-Cortez never explained her desire to eliminate the holiday, but it falls in line with other left-leaning views about glorifying Columbus. Instead of seeing him as a historical figure and famous explorer, they believe he is a symbol of early tensions between settlers and Native Americans.
• The newly-appointed Congresswoman, who is a democratic socialist, also wants to give everyone in the country Medicare while also abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Meanwhile, we have migrants threatening to storm the border.
