(RightWing.org) – Russia is grabbing the headlines right now after last month’s brutal invasion of Ukraine, but China could be the real long-term threat to US interests. For decades now, the communist regime in Beijing has been waging economic warfare and industrial espionage to build its influence around the world and right here in the US. Now, Republican senators want to know why President Biden’s Justice Department (DOJ) has shut down a program dedicated to catching Chinese agents.
On February 23, the DOJ ended the China Initiative, a counterintelligence program set up by the Trump administration to protect US technology from Chinese spies. A department spokesman claimed while China is the most “brazen” threat, the US needs a “broader approach.” He also argued the program “unjustly targeted” China. Now, a team that’s also defending against other hostile countries like Russia and Iran will handle Chinese espionage.

Now, a group of GOP senators wants answers. Led by Marco Rubio (R-FL), they wrote to Attorney General Merrick Garland, asking him to give a proper justification for the move. Calling the new strategy “vague,” Rubio wrote the administration shouldn’t scrap national security programs over “unproven allegations of racial profiling.” The letter demands answers to several questions designed to ensure the new program protects us as well as Trump’s did – but will the administration have those answers?
