Report: 1 Dead in Hard Landing on Skyscraper
A rainy Monday afternoon turned deadly when a helicopter made a crash landing on a Midtown Manhattan office building. Sparking memories of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, there was some initial concern when what was first reported as a plane, not a helicopter according to WPIX 11, erupted in flames above the city.
Although flying in restricted airspace, statements from FAA officials indicate the pilot lost contact with controllers and did not intentionally fly into the area with the objective of creating a panic.
The pilot, identified as Tim McCormack (according to ABC 7 in New York) and the sole fatality, may have had a midair emergency and tried to land his craft on the nearest available level surface. President Trump tweeted a message saying that he has been briefed and thanking first responders for their constant vigilance.
