Biden Wants NASA and Military Bases to Help With Border Crisis

( – The crisis at the nation’s southern border continues to grow. Things have gotten so bad that a group of 275 US sheriffs sent a letter to President Biden urging him to “embrace the common-sense” border policies maintained by the Trump administration. ABC News recently reported that Biden planned to use Moffett Field, a joint military-civilian base leased to NASA, to house unaccompanied migrant children.

Intercept contributor Ken Klippenstein reported on April 6 that he obtained a copy of an internal email distributed by NASA. The letter directs employees to a government site to apply as volunteers for the Office of Refugee Resettlement to support unaccompanied migrant children.

Although housing migrant children in government facilities might look like a good solution at first glance, it raises several concerns. Where is the funding coming from to pay the volunteers’ travel expenses? What happens at their regular jobs? What measures is the government taking to prevent the spread of COVID-19 from infected migrants? Who is vetting them as people safe to work with minor children?

It’s time for the Biden administration to begin working with congressional members from both parties to develop a long-term solution to the nation’s border crisis. In the meantime, why not reinstate the Trump administration’s successful border security strategy?
