On April 19, the Department of Homeland Security announced an extra 22,000 H-2B visas for seasonal guest workers, on top of 66,000 existing visa allocations. That will allow almost 90,000 workers to take jobs in the US, while unemployment runs at 6.6% and millions of Americans can’t find work. DHS spokesman Alejandro Mayorkas hinted that the priority will be on immigrants from the so-called “Northern Triangle” countries of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. These are low-income countries, and more immigration from them will also push down wages.
President Trump’s administration suspended the H-2B program last year to make more jobs available for unemployed Americans. Now, Biden has decided to take that opportunity away in favor of his immigration agenda.
