Top Biden Official Suddenly Announces Resignation
(RightWing.org) – President Joe Biden nominated Chris Magnus to serve as the head of the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) service shortly after taking office. By mid-October 2022, administration officials were telling media outlets that they were questioning his ability to continue serving in light of his inability to address the rising tide of illegal immigrants crossing into the US. Roughly a month later, he suddenly announced his resignation.
On November 11, Magnus told the Los Angeles Times that Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas asked for his resignation, citing concerns about his ability to secure the border. Mayorkas also told him he would recommend his dismissal to President Joe Biden if he refused to step down. Magnus said he told the secretary, “there was no justification for me to resign,” adding that he “still cared deeply” about his role as CBP commissioner.

However, the following day, Magnus suddenly tendered his resignation amid mounting controversy surrounding his LA Times interview. He told the Times in a separate interview that he decided to reverse his previous decision, thinking his departure from the CBP provided him with the “best path” to advance his “commitment to professional, innovative, and community-engaged policing.”
According to The Daily Wire, the White House faced increasing pressure from Republicans for months to replace Magnus. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre issued a press release confirming President Biden accepted Magnus’ resignation.

Sec. Mayorkas sent out an email informing CBP employees of Magnus’ resignation. The secretary also wrote that Deputy CBP Commissioner Troy Miller would temporarily head the agency, effective immediately.
