A few weeks ago, Beto O’Rourke looked like he had a real chance of making it to the White House — but now he’s out of the running. The former Texas representative announced on Friday that he was winding up his presidential campaign.
There are 17 candidates still chasing the Democrat nomination and in the early stages of the campaign, O’Rourke was ahead of most of them. Just weeks later, collapsing poll numbers have persuaded him to give up.
Although O’Rourke has spent his career as a fairly mainstream Democrat, he’s made some controversial statements during the campaign. This was an obvious attempt to collect left-wing votes, but it seems to have backfired on him as moderates were put off by his new-found radicalism. In particular, he infuriated Second Amendment supporters by openly admitting he planned to confiscate semi-automatic rifles.
Will Beto be back? Who knows — but on Friday he had this to say on Twitter:
One down, 16 to go!
